Vision requires seeing what could be. How employees see their job can influence their effort and performance. Are they moving pig iron or building a railroad, chipping rocks or building a cathedral? Employees need to understand not only their task, but how they connect to the creation of value. Let's explore this idea using an example. The collection of smudges to the right contains an image. Do you see it? Do you see the cowboy on a horse? If you
didn't, look again. Now that you know what
to look for, do you see it? What's the lesson? Look at the image again. Even with the shading gone, it is no longer just a collection of smudges. You still see the cowboy and you cannot simply "unsee" him.
